Tips for keeping up your training during the Summer season

With better weather, festivals, weddings and holidays, summer can be a difficult time to stick to your usual training routine. And while taking a break can be essential from time to time, here’s our tips to help ensure that a cheeky week off to enjoy the summer sunshine doesn’t set you back too far from reaching your aerial and pole goals.

Planning to train with a friend is a great way to stay accountable

  1. Assess your goals. It can be easy to fall out of a routine if you don’t have your goals in view. Are you hoping to reach a particular trick or level of flexibility this year? What’s your plan for this.

One thing I personally struggle with is consistency, so this year I made a deal with myself that I would do 1 Pole, 1 Aerial and 1 Weights session per week. Anything else is a bonus for me, and I keep a note of all my sessions so I can stay accountable to myself. I try to remind myself that even when I don’t ‘feel like’ training I usually enjoy myself once I’m there and feel accomplished when I’m done.

  2. Use Open Gym times to your advantage. Open Gym is a self led session which you can use to brush up on your existing skills. Unlike our classes, Open Gym sessions tend to be less busy and are usually several hours long, allowing you much more time on the equipment, allowing you to build up your strength and stamina.

If a holiday or event is stopping you from getting to your usual class, take a look at the schedule to see if you can fit in some Open Gym training at a different time. You could pop down on your lunch break or a Friday night. There’s lots of options to squeeze an extra session in!

Pro tip: plan your Open Gym sessions with a friend. That way you’ll have fun training together and less reason to cancel!

  3. Take advantage of the flexibility within our Memberships. Your class bookings can be moved/changed as long as you do it with 24hrs notice on the system. If summer plans mean you won’t make it to your usual class, use up those credits on something different and challenge yourself to go to a class that you’ve never tried before!
Usually a Hoop gal? Why not hit up a Trapeze or Silks class?! Or maybe you’re a Pole Fitness loyalist who could use a Flow class or two to break up the usual routine.

When planning a longer trip away, some of our members will even use all of their class credits in a week to get the most out of their memberships… talk about commitment!

  4. Book your classes in advance: Planning your summer weeks in advance around events will help you make sure you’re still able to make it to class, even when you have a busy week or events coming up. Avoid cancellations on the day of class where possible, as not only will you lose the credit, but your instructor has planned the session around the people on the register, and they are looking forward to seeing you!

  5. And finally…Don’t stress about taking a break!
Sometimes we panic that because we’ve missed a few weeks of training we’ll somehow have forgotten everything and lost all of our strength and flexibility… umm reality check! We have not!

Of course it can feel a wee bit challenging to return to class after a break but it’s never as bad as our ‘worst case scenario’ brains tell us. A lot of the time you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the amount of muscle memory we have.
